The batteries

Lithium technology has improved incredibly over the last decade. The resulting consumer grade lithium tech is energy dense, light weight, reliable, and low cost. We use Panasonic (TM) 3400 mAh Lithium 18650 batteries. These are the same cells that are used in most current Tesla (TM) electric vehicles and energy products. Playback times approach 18 hours of continuous playback for a full charge.

The Speaker hardware

Our speaker hardware voiced for a flat frequency response up to 20 kHz. The Neomorphus speaker uses two tweeters and a 3" woofer. All of our speaker cones are made of waterproof polymer and designed for quality sound reproduction in wet and humid environments.

The speaker box

We 3d print our speaker boxes to minimize cost, maximize function, and enable you to print your own versions of replacement parts. Our favorite material so far is pure ABS. This is a strong and durable plastic. The protective screen is made from either ABS or a 3d-printed wood fiber to allow staining and natural aging. You may order protective screens of different colors separately (or print your own).

The case is designed to be simple and snag free. Forest environments have a tendency to break anything that is exposed, so we designed the speaker box to be sleek. The square form factor also allows for you to easily create mounting options and customize your speaker for your application. In the past, we have sewn straps to carry the speakers, tied them to poles, stacked them for stereo effects, etc. We find all of this easier with a square box.

The speaker protective grill has been designed to deflect water and allow quick drainage if it gets wet. We have tried to eliminate the pattern of the circular speakers using the protective grill design, as wildlife tends to be wary of eye-shaped circular patterns (like twin speakers, binoculars, camera lenses, etc).

All of our cases are coated in a 2k polyurethane coating. This coating serves several purposes. It provides a waterproof and rubberized texture that dissipates impacts, it is UV resistant, and is impervious to most chemical spills.

The Bluetooth antenna

Not everyone uses Bluetooth, and not everyone needs a lot of range for their Bluetooth signal. We provide the option of using an external Bluetooth antenna to allow the use of a high gain Bluetooth antenna to suit your needs. We offer several options, but any antenna designed for Bluetooth will work (as long as it fits the coaxial port).

Aux signal bias: To minimize the potential of “missing a bird” to a user error, we have designed the 3.5m aux port to send signal regardless of Bluetooth connectivity. This means if the Bluetooth is connected but you send a signal through the aux, the speaker will still play the signal.

Low standby Power

The standby draw is very low for our amps, so you can leave your speaker on and ready to connect for hours. This is especially handy with several speakers placed for target mist-netting, where you can selectively connect to individual speakers to move birds one way or another.

Charge with Multiple Power Sources

Field environments are often hectic and unpredictable. Losing chargers is a pain in the ass. Our Multiple Charge Source (MCS) capable speakers are adaptable on the fly. Any direct current (DC) 15 to 24 volt source (>30 watts) will charge the Neomorphus. This includes many laptop chargers and power supplies made for other electronics. Just make sure the barrel connector has the same polarity and fits, and you can charge your speaker. Of course we provide a charger, but if you lose the charger, you should be able to find an easy replacement. A 12v source (like a 12v car battery) will even work in a pinch, although you may not reach a full charge.

But what if there is no power source? Our MCS speakers have Multiple Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charging technology. This is the same power management that is used in solar charge controllers to manage the variable voltage arriving from solar panels. What does this mean? You can charge your speaker by directly connecting it to any 20-100 watt solar panel that supplies a float voltage of 16.5-21.5v. You don’t need a charge controller to charge directly off of a 16.5-21.5v, 20-100 watt solar panel. Any solar panel that fits the specifications will charge a Neotropical Audio MCS speaker. We sell a collapsible, convenient solar panel separately that works well.

So, in short, you can charge your speaker with any 15-24v DC, minimum 30 watt source or a 20-100 watt solar panel with 16.5-21.5 float (open) voltage.

Caveats

This is completely custom made. We are not a major manufacturer, we are biologists and engineers that enjoy making speakers and tinkering with electronics. We are offering a solution that we use ourselves. Changes may be made by request and charges may apply. If you want something changed, just ask!
